Hurricane Irene is updated: NJ POWER


Statewide - nearly 275,000 customers reported power outages due to storm conditions and failure to recover may take several days, depending on the utilities.

Customers should be prepared for possible long outages. Crews will begin service to recover from the heavy winds die down and it is safe to work on power lines

Power failures can be more in store as forecasters predict maximum wind speeds of 40 to 50 mph with gusts to 70 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Since the fallout of Hurricane Irene ramps up in southern New Jersey was the hardest hit by power outages. In northern New Jersey, PSE & G reported failures due to high winds and tree branches on power lines beaten.
In Atlantic City, were also widely reported failures and casinos closed for only the third time since gambling was legalized in the state in 1978 as a result of the storm.
