Fahrenheit 451

In the U.S., we measure the temperature using the Fahrenheit scale. + 32 = Fahrenheit 9/5Celsius. This means that water freezes at 32 º C and boils at 212 º C. Body temperature is 96.8 º C. To give you a general idea of the seasonal average temperatures in New York, the average high in July is 84 degrees F (29C), while the average January low is 25 º C (-4 º C).

And the paper burns at 451 degrees F, inspiring the name of the futuristic dystopian novel, Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. If you click the poster below, you can watch a video film based on the book. Below is the dialog that appears in the video.

Woman: Is it true that long ago, firefighters extinguish or burn books.

Firefighter 1: Oh really! Your uncle is right, you're the light in the head! Turn off the lights! Who told you that?
Woman: Oh, I do not know anyone. But is this true? Do they?
Firefighter 1: What a strange idea!

Woman: Tell me, all ye that the number of wear, which means?
Firefighter 1: Oh, Fahrenheit 4-5-1
Woman: Why 4-5-1 instead of 8-1-3 ...
Firefighter 1: Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper ignites book and begins to burn.

Firefighter 2: There's nothing there. The books have nothing to say! All those people who never existed. People who read them, it makes them unhappy with their lives, it makes them want to live in other ways that never really be.

Firefighter 2: All of this philosophy, we will get rid of. It's even worse than the novels. Thinkers, philosophers, all say the same thing, "But I am! The others are all idiots!"

Firefighter 2: It's not good, we all look alike. The only way to be happy is the same for everyone. So you have to burn books. All books!

Women: Have you ever read the books you burn?
Firefighter 1: Why should I? First, I'm not. And second, I have better things to do. And thirdly, no.

Firefighter 1: You are nothing but zombies, all of you! Like the men of yours, you do not know. You do not live, you're just killing time!

Firefighter 2: What do you think you do?! There is no need for it!
